Ballpark pricing: 8.5 by 11 inches, framed @ $250; 11 by 14 @$500; 16 by 20 inches @$800. These prices do not include cost of requested changes; all rights for reproduction are retained by the artist.

Assumptions
1. Artist and Botanist discuss illustration needs; Artist provides Botanist with estimate of cost per illustration.


2. Botanist provides artist with all materials to work from; usually from one or more of the following:
a. herbarium specimens
b. photographs
c. liquid-preserved specimens
d. digital files


3. Botanist provides artist with
a. list of characters to be illustrated
b. finished or draft manuscript of article to be illustrated


4. Artist renders pencil drawings and arranges into designed illustration plate(s).


5. Artist sends PDF files of designed pencil illustration plate(s) to Botanist for editorial comments.


6. Botanist
a. edits by marking up hard copy of PDF files
b. makes copies of edited hard copy for their files
c. sends edited hard copy of illustration plate(s) to artist


7. Artist makes corrections to illustrations.
a. if corrections are major, Artist will resend PDF files of draft illustrations with corrections.
b. if corrections are minor, artist will incorporate into inked drawings.
c. if corrections are due to change of instruction or incorrect material originally provided to
Artist, Botanist will be charged a fee of $50 per hour.


8. Artist inks illustration plate(s) and sends PDF files of inked plate(s) to Botanist for editorial comments.


9. Botanist
a. edits by marking up hard copy of PDF files
b. makes copies of edited hard copy for their files
c. sends edited hard copy of illustration plate(s) to artist


10. Artist makes corrections to illustrations. If corrections are due to change of instruction or incorrect material originally provided to Artist, Botanist will be charged a fee of $50 per hour.


11. Payment will be made as follows:
a. 1/3 upon initiation of project
b. 1/3 upon submition of designed draft illustration plates (No. 5 above)
c. 1/3 upon receipt of final approved illustration plates and electronic files used for illustrations.


12. Original illustrations will become the property of the Botanist; Botanist will obtain rights to use illustration for scientific, not-for-profit uses only. Artist will retain rights to use illustrations for teaching or promotional purposes. Any other uses by Artist or Botanist will occur with written permission from the other party first.
