Botanical Art and Illustration
Botanical Sketching for field notes and journaling--Hone
your skills at drawing plants in pencil for field notes or journals.
An Introduction to Botanical Art. Learn the basics
for creating botanical illustrations from professional botanist, botanical
illustrator, and teacher, Dr. Linda Ann Vorobik. Linda, through demonstrations
and lectures, introduces participants to drawing skills, parts of the
plant, what botanical illustration is when defined precisely, and watercolor
techniques as used for painting plant portraits. The first morning of
the workshop begins with introductions and demonstrations followed by
supervised drawing to create pencil drafts for watercolors; later in
the morning pen & ink supplies are described and techniques are
demonstrated. The afternoon consists of lecture/demonstrations on watercolor
supplies and techniques followed by drawing and painting time. The second
morning will begin with more demonstrations followed by supervised drawing
and painting. The workshop closes with a friendly critique of works
produced. All skill levels are welcome: accomplished artists can increase
their knowledge of botany and skilled botanists learn drawing and painting
techniques.
Botanical Art: Pencil Drawings. In this two-day workshop
Dr. Linda Ann Vorobik, botanist and illustrator with over 25 years experience,
teaches the basics of how to draw plants accurately in preparation for
finishing art pieces (outside of workshop or in another of Linda’s
workshops) in pen and ink, watercolor, or other medium. The workshop
emphasizes learning botanical terms and parts of plants, drawing accurately,
understanding value, and creating informative and pleasing compositions.
Day one emphasizes drawing accurately and understanding parts of plants
and botanical terms through drawing; day two emphasizes value drawing
and composition. The workshop closes with a friendly critique. All skill
levels are welcome: accomplished artists can increase their knowledge
of botany and skilled botanists learn drawing techniques.

Botanical Art: Watercolor. Learn the basics creating
botanical watercolors from professional botanist, botanical illustrator,
and teacher, Dr. Linda Ann Vorobik. Linda, through demonstrations and
lectures, introduces participants to watercolor as used for painting
plants. The first morning begins with a lecture and demonstrations of

styles of botanical watercolor. The second morning will begin with more
advanced watercolor demonstrations. Most of the workshop will be devoted
to participant drawing and painting with supervision by Linda. The workshop
closes on by finishing watercolors, followed by a friendly critique
of paintings produced. Recommended prerequisite: Vorobik’s “Introduction

Botany and Plant Identification
Basic Botany. To learn how to identify vascular plants
[not just flowering plants] or refine your skills and expand your botanical
vocabulary. Emphasis is on learning the characters [not restricted to
flowering plant characters] needed to identify plants using The Jepson
Manual and other identification guides. To learn the specialized features
of groups such ferns, composites, and grasses. Participants will also
be introduced to plant families that are commonly encountered in California.
This workshop is designed to start at an introductory level and is appropriate
for both beginners and those seeking an in-depth review.
Crash Course in Plant Identification. Learn approximately
40 common families of native plants, including ferns, gymnosperms, dicots,
and monocots native to southwestern Oregon. Each morning includes a
slide-lecture introduction to plant families, followed by a session
of learning to use identification keys in The Jepson Manual. Afternoons
are spent in the field visiting a diverse array of habitats and keying
plants encountered. Any and all levels of knowledge and education are
welcome; some experience with botany and biology will be helpful. Be
prepared for some vigorous hiking and uncomfortable weather conditions.
Advanced Plant Identification: Compositae. This comparative
overview of identification characteristics used in the families Asteraceae,
Cyperaceae, Poaceae, and Juncaceae is designed to help participants
key plants using The Jepson Manual and other floras. Mornings
are spent in the classroom with a morning slide lecture followed by
keying specimens and provide a base for afternoons in the field. Some
experience with botanical nomenclature and keying is highly recommended.
Advanced Plant Identification: Graminoids. This comparative
overview of identification characteristics used in the families Cyperaceae,
Poaceae, and Juncaceae is designed to help participants key plants using
The Jepson Manual and other floras. Mornings are spent in the
classroom with a morning slide lecture followed by keying specimens
and provide a base for afternoons in the field. Some experience with
botanical nomenclature and keying is highly recommended.
